Avezzano Hospital Facility

Avezzano (AQ)

PA- IM

Studio Calia Srl carried out the executive design and construction supervision for the complete renovation of the mechanical and air treatment systems of the Dialysis Department at the San Filippo e Nicola Hospital in Avezzano (AQ), a key healthcare facility serving the entire Marsica area. The intervention aimed to improve indoor environmental quality and the energy efficiency of the building systems, while ensuring high hygienic and safety standards, essential in a department dedicated to vulnerable patients undergoing continuous therapies. The new HVAC and air treatment system was designed according to the latest sustainability and energy-saving criteria, using high-efficiency units and automatic control systems capable of maintaining constant thermo-hygrometric parameters and air purity levels. Airflow rates were defined based on the activities performed, occupancy levels, and room volumes, ensuring adequate air exchange and precise control of cross-contamination between spaces. The department is served by two dedicated air handling units (AHUs): one for the dialysis ward, maintained under slight positive pressure to guarantee maximum hygiene and patient protection, and one for the negative-pressure room, intended for the management of potentially infectious cases, preventing the spread of contaminants to adjacent areas. Particular attention was paid to integrating the new systems with the existing structures, minimizing the impact of the works and ensuring continuity of healthcare activities during the construction phases. Energy recovery systems were also implemented on the exhaust air, contributing to reduced consumption and overall system performance optimization. This intervention represents a significant step in the modernization of hospital infrastructure in the Abruzzo region, improving quality of care and environmental conditions for both staff and patients, in line with the most advanced standards in hospital engineering and energy sustainability.

Dermatology clinic - Bari

Bari (BA)

PR- IM- S

Studio Calia Srl managed the design and construction supervision for the installation of new mechanical systems serving a dermatology clinic located in the center of Bari. The facility, operating for many years and serving as a reference point for the local area, required a systems upgrade due to the critical condition of the existing boiler plant, which was no longer capable of ensuring adequate thermal comfort and energy efficiency. The project began with a comprehensive energy audit aimed at identifying the weaknesses of the existing system and defining the most effective intervention strategies. This was followed by the development of the executive design for the new boiler plant, with the objective of maximizing energy performance and improving indoor environmental comfort within the clinical spaces. The new boiler plant, fully renovated in its production and control components, incorporates high-efficiency generators and advanced control systems, enabling modulating thermal output management and continuous monitoring of energy consumption. The intervention also included optimization of the distribution networks, replacement of terminal units, and upgrading of the ventilation systems to ensure temperature uniformity, indoor air quality, and low operational noise levels. Particular attention was given to maintaining operational continuity of the healthcare facility during the construction phases, ensuring that clinical activities could continue without interruption. The technical solutions adopted were also selected to minimize acoustic and visual impact, integrating harmoniously with the existing interior spaces. As a result of this intervention, the clinic is now equipped with a modern, efficient, and reliable mechanical system capable of guaranteeing optimal comfort conditions for both patients and healthcare staff, with a significant reduction in energy consumption and operating costs. A concrete example of how proper systems engineering design can contribute to the functional and sustainable refurbishment of urban healthcare facilities.

Within the framework of the Technical and Economic Feasibility Project (PFTE) concerning ordinary and extraordinary maintenance and functional upgrading works for the buildings of the Sepino Archaeological Park, Studio Calia Srl carried out the specialist design of the technological systems serving Building 23, which houses the administrative headquarters. The intervention is aimed at improving energy performance, thermo-hygrometric comfort, and operational efficiency of the building, in compliance with Legislative Decree 36/2023 and relevant technical regulations. The project includes the implementation of an integrated system consisting of winter and summer air conditioning with an air-to-water heat pump, hydronic fan coil units with local control, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, a water supply and drainage system sized in accordance with UNI 9182, as well as an electrical system and structured cabling compliant with current CEI standards. Particular attention was given to thermal load optimization, reduction of pressure losses in hydronic circuits, and intelligent system management through centralized supervision and control. The plant infrastructure was designed to ensure flexibility, reliability, and operational continuity, consistent with the building’s administrative function and the requirements for protection and enhancement of the archaeological context. The intervention contributes to strengthening public accessibility of the Park, ensuring high standards of energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and technological integration.

Mental Health Center Avezzano

Avezzano (AQ)

PA- IM

On behalf of Local Health Authority No. 1 Avezzano–Sulmona–L’Aquila, we developed the executive design of the new boiler plant serving the Mental Health Center in Avezzano, with the objective of ensuring energy efficiency, system reliability, and full regulatory compliance within a healthcare setting. The intervention included the installation of a 240 kW condensing boiler connected to the recently upgraded existing distribution system, as well as the integration of a domestic hot water production system using a 1,000-liter storage tank. The project involved the analytical sizing of all components: circulation pumps for the four heating zones and for the storage tank, expansion vessels for both primary and secondary circuits, safety and water treatment systems, and the fluid-dynamic verification of the flue system in accordance with UNI EN 13384. Particular attention was devoted to balancing the four thermal zones of the building, verifying distributed and localized pressure losses, and accurately defining pump head requirements to ensure operational continuity and stable performance in a sensitive healthcare environment. The project was developed through an integrated approach: thermal load analysis, optimization of technical spaces, coordination with the contracting authority, and assistance through the commissioning phase, ensuring high performance, system safety, and long-term durability.

Within the framework of a Framework Agreement for civil and industrial electrical systems maintenance, we developed the executive design and cost estimation for interventions on various power supply systems and field switchboards. The work included the design of new switchboards complete with single-line diagrams for panels dedicated to machinery systems, wells, tanks, and low-point stations. This involved defining thermal-magnetic and residual current protections, verifying operating currents, sizing electrical lines, and checking voltage drops. Particular attention was given to protection selectivity, operational continuity, and the provision of spare capacity for future expansions. A project focused on system reliability, electrical safety, and long-term maintainability.

Studio Calia Srl carried out a preliminary energy refurbishment project, including a comprehensive energy audit, for the “La Marchesa” corporate headquarters (former Olivetti building), consisting of three above-ground floors and one basement level, with a total volume exceeding 51,000 m³. The building featured a hybrid plant system, with diesel-fired boilers for heating and a water-to-water heat pump for cooling, with a peak demand of approximately 850 kW and total energy consumption exceeding 5.6 GWh over the two-year period analyzed. Two main scenarios were developed: Scenario 1 – Systems and photovoltaic intervention Replacement of the diesel-based heating system with a high-efficiency heat pump and installation of a photovoltaic system of approximately 464 kWp, with an estimated annual production of about 774,000 kWh. Scenario 2 – Integrated systems + envelope intervention In addition to plant refurbishment and photovoltaic installation, insulation of the roof using a high-performance dry XPS system. Further reduction of energy consumption and improvement of indoor comfort, with an estimated ROI of approximately 3.5–4 years. Both solutions were designed to ensure full operational continuity of the offices, without interrupting business activities. A strategic intervention that transforms an energy-intensive building into a high-efficiency system, with a drastic reduction in fossil fuel consumption, increased energy autonomy, and significant reduction in operating costs.
